EU revised POPs regulations

Recently, the European Union issued Regulation (EU) No. 2022/2291, which formally revised the regulations on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs), setting the unintentional trace pollutant (UTC) limit of hexachlorobenzene (HCB) (CAS No.: 118-74-1) at 10mg/kg to clarify legal issues and promote implementation. In the original version ((EU) 2019/1021), the requirement for HCB is prohibited, but there is no clear limit requirement. (EU) 2022/2291 has specified the specific limit value, that is, the requirement for substances, mixtures or articles is ≤ 10 mg/kg, which will take effect on December 13, 2022.

The European Commission issued Regulation (EU) No. 2022/2400, amending Appendix IV and Appendix V of the Persistent Organic Pollutants Regulation, reducing the allowable limit of some persistent organic pollutants in waste, and setting a limit for perfluorohexane sulfonic acid (PFHxS). The revision of the new rules is to better align the EU rules on persistent organic pollutants with the objectives of green trade and circular economy. The regulation was published in the Official Gazette on December 9 and will enter into force on June 10, 2023.
