EU Kitchen Utensils Standard EN 12983 Releases Major Updates

The European Standards Committee has issued new versions of the kitchen utensils standards EN 12983-1:2013 and EN 12983-2:201
On February 22nd, 2023, the European Standards Committee issued new versions of the kitchen utensils standards EN 12983-1:2013 and EN 12983-2:2013, replacing the old standards EN 12983-1:2000/AC: 2008 and CEN/TS 12983-2:2005. The corresponding national standards of the EU member countries will be completely invalidated by August at the latest.
The new standard kitchen utensils standard integrates the testing content of the original standard and adds performance tests related to multiple coatings. The specific changes are shown in the table below:
Main changes to EN 12983-1:2013:
- Add the handle tension test in the original CEN/TS 12983-2:2005
- Add non staining coating performance test
- Add the corrosion resistance test of non stained coatings in the original CEN/TS 12983-2:2005
- Added heat distribution test in the original CEN/TS 12983-2:2005
- Added and modified the applicability test for multiple heat sources in the original CEN/TS 12983-2:2005
Main changes to EN 12983-2:2013
- The standard scope is limited to ceramic kitchenware and glass covers only
- Delete handle tensile test, durability test for non stained coatings, corrosion resistance test for non stained coatings, heat distribution test, and applicability test for multiple heat sources
- Increase the impact resistance of ceramics
- Increase performance requirements for ceramic non stick coatings and easy to clean coatings
- Modification of thermal shock resistance requirements for ceramics
Compared to the old version of the kitchen utensils standard, the new standard has higher requirements on the performance of non coating and ceramic kitchen utensils. In addition, in chemical performance testing, the PFAS of the coating is also worthy of attention.
