British Plug and Socket BS 1363 Series Standard Replacement Notice

The British plug and socket BS 1363 series standard has been updated, and the corresponding old version of the standard will be abolished on June 30, 2026.

Recently, BSI Standards Limited has released new versions of BS 1363-1:2023, BS 1363-2: 2023, BS 1363-3:2023, BS 1363-4: 2023, and BS 1363-5: 2023 under the permission of the British Standards Institute. BS1363 is the UK plug and socket standard, and the corresponding old version will be abolished on June 30, 2026.

 

New changes to BS 1363

01. Changes made to all components of the standard series (BS 1363 Part 1-5)

1. The working frequency is now within the range from 50Hz to 60H;
2. The minimum copper content of current carrying components made of brass should be 58%;
3. Insulation and electrical strength testing now includes provisions for disconnect indicators and built-in electronic components;
4. Modifications to the requirements for switch actuation components, including single button switches where the actuation component occupies a single stationary position;
5. New requirements for testing the actuation force of bipolar switches (installation).

 

02. Other changes specifically made to BS 1363-1:2023

1. New non rewirable plug requirements, used for the creepage distance and electrical clearance between fuses and clips, as well as the joint surface after removing the fuse carrier or fuse cover;
2. The overload test of plugs now requires plugs that can be rewired to be equipped with a 13A fuse, and plugs that cannot be rewired to be equipped with a fuse;
The highest rated fuse of the cable specified in Table 2;
3. The new attachment provides recommendations for products containing BS 1363-1 plug pins.

 

03. Other changes specifically made to BS 1363-2: 2023

1. Sockets containing equipment circuit breakers (CBEs) are now within the standard range;
2. New definition, requirements, and testing of individually protected sockets (IPS);
3. Socket switches shall not be used for electronic components other than switch indicator lights;
4. Modify the clearance requirements for the installation box of embedded sockets;
5. Do not use reusable fasteners, anti prying screws, and safety screws for portable sockets that cannot be rewired;
6. Switches in sockets that comply with BS EN IEC 61058: 2018 or BS EN 60669-1: 2018 do not require normal operation testing;
7. Modify the requirements for integrated electronic components in the attachment. Specifically, the USB circuit is designed to charge portable devices and adds abnormal conditions and energy efficiency requirements;
8. The new appendix provides recommendations for products containing BS 1363-2 sockets.

 

04. Other changes specifically made to BS 1363-3:2023

1. Changes in the rated current requirements of the adapter;
2. Added new adapter requirements to meet the maximum number of sockets on the same plane;
3. The attachment has modified the requirements for integrated electronic components, especially the USB circuit used for charging portable devices, adding abnormal conditions.
