California Adjusts Chemicals in Consumer Goods under California Proposition 65
On July 11, 2023, California has made adjustments to a series of consumer goods containing Proposition 65 chemicals.
California Proposition 65, the 1986 Drinking Water Safety and Toxic Substances Enforcement Act, was passed by California residents with an overwhelming vote in November 1986. It requires the state to disclose a list of chemicals known to cause cancer, birth defects, and/or reproductive harm. This list was first published in 1987 and has now grown to over 900 chemicals.
In Proposition 65, unless exempted, companies are prohibited from intentionally exposing individuals to chemicals 12 months after they are listed without prior clear and reasonable warnings.
Several solutions proposed this time include Hexavalent chromium, lead, n-nenenebb nitroso Diethylamine and Phthalic acid esters. The specific types of Phthalic acid esters are as follows:
