2023-10-28

The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) has issued a pre release version of standard IEC 60947-4-1:2023 PRV "Low voltage switchgear and control equipment - Part 4-1: Contactors and motor starters - Electromechanical contactors and motor starters".

The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) has issued a pre release version of standard IEC 60947-4-1:2023 PRV "Low voltage switchgear and control equipment - Part 4-1: Contactors and motor starters - Electromechanical contactors and motor starters".

The IEC 60947-4-1:2023 standard applies to the following equipment:

-Electromechanical contactors and starters, including motor protection switching devices (MPSD and IMPSD);
-Operator of contactor type relay;
-Special contacts for contactor or contactor type relay coil circuits;
-Special accessories (such as special wiring, special lock buckle accessories);

The above equipment is connected to the distribution circuit, motor circuit, and other load circuits, with a rated voltage of AC not exceeding 1000 V or DC not exceeding 1500 V DC contactor.

This fifth edition of the standard constitutes a technical revision, canceling and replacing the fourth edition of IEC 60947-4-1:2018 in 2018. Compared to the old version, the new version has the following major technical changes:

a) Objects within the scope;
b) Instantaneous single motor protection switching device IMPSD (3.5.33);
c) Equipment type (5.2.1);
d) Motor overload protection method (5.2.6);
e) Adopting AC-7d (5.4.2) from IEC 61095:20- [1] standard;
f) Separately installed starter overload relay (see 5.7.3 b);
g) Starters and contactors suitable for use downstream of the basic drive module (6.1.2 w);
h) Environmental requirements refer to IEC TS 63058 standard (6.4);
i) Movable wiring (in 8.1.3);
j) Using transient voltage suppression devices (8.1.18);
k) Accessible components subject to temperature limitations (in 8.2.2.3);
l) Reference was made to Appendix X of IEC 60947-1:2020 standard to coordinate MPSD and SCPD (8.2.5.4);
m) Referring to different EMC environments of IEC TR 63216 standard (8.3.1);
n) The embedded software design refers to the IEC TR 63201 standard (8.4);
o) The requirements for network security refer to the IEC TS 63208 standard (8.5);
p) Update and complete the measurement method for electromagnetic power consumption (9.3.3.2.1.2);
q) Update Appendix C to cover the reasonableness of AC-3e;
r) The critical load current for photovoltaic applications has been determined (M.8.7).
