EU ECHA proposal for new restrictions on hexavalent chromium

Time:

2023-10-17

The European Commission has requested the European Chemicals Administration (ECHA) to prepare a REACH restriction proposal for certain chromium (VI) substances currently on the Authorization List of Substances of High Concern.

On October 11, 2023, the European Commission requested the European Chemicals Administration (ECHA) to prepare a REACH restriction proposal for certain chromium (VI) substances currently on the Authorization List of Substances of High Concern.

ECHA has received authorization from the European Commission to prepare an Annex XV report proposing restrictions on chromium (VI) substances in items 16 and 17 of the current REACH authorization list (Annex XIV). ECHA will submit the proposal before October 4, 2024.

The limitation proposal aims to address the challenges posed by the current and future workload of ECHA and the committee. This workload stems from a large number of applications for authorization to use these substances, which have been submitted or may come from hundreds of companies. For ECHA, evaluating applications and providing conclusive opinions on them will exceed the existing resources of the Risk Assessment Committee (RAC) and the Socio Economic Analysis Committee (SEAC), and will affect their work in regulating other hazardous chemicals.

If ECHA discovers potential risks of replacing other hexavalent chromium substances during the development of restriction proposals, it may expand the scope of authorization to other hexavalent chromium substances.
