EU food contact metal and alloy materials control has undergone significant updates!

The European Union has released the second edition of the Technical Guidelines for Food Contact Metal/Alloy Materials, updating the migration limits for Cr, Mn, and Tl, adding Zr restrictions, updating testing conditions, and deleting the compliance declaration section.

To supplement Resolution CM/Res (2020) 9, the European Medicines Agency has released the second edition of the Technical Guidelines for Food Contact Metal/Alloy Materials and Products, aimed at ensuring the safety and quality of food contact materials and products made of metals and alloys.
1、 Main updates and changes
Compared to the first version, the second version mainly includes the following updates:
1. The migration limit for chromium (Cr): Cr is set at 1 mg/kg (original limit: 0.250mg/kg)
2. Manganese (Mn): The migration limit for Mn is set at 0.55 mg/kg (original limit: 1.8 mg/kg)
3. Thallium (Tl): The migration limit of Tl is set at 0.001 mg/kg (original limit: 0.0001 mg/kg)
4. Added restriction element zirconium (Zr) with a migration limit of 2 mg/kg
5. Update the Testing Conditions for Kitchen Articles in Contact with Foodstuff: Plastics, Metals, Silicone&Rubber or its revisions document (Beldi et al., 2021)
6. To maintain consistency with CM/Res (2020) 9, delete the relevant sections on conformity statements in the first version.
