83 types of electrical products have been officially included in the mandatory certification list of BIS in India!

India has issued the 2024 Safety (Quality Control) Order for Household, Commercial and Similar Electrical Appliances, requiring 83 types of electrical products to obtain BIS certification, which will officially come into effect on March 17, 2025. Remind Chinese enterprises to complete BIS mandatory certification in a timely manner to ensure the smooth entry of their products into the Indian market.

Recently, the Indian Ministry of Industry and Domestic Trade Promotion issued the Quality Control Order (QCO) for Household, Commercial and Similar Electrical Appliances 2024 in the Indian Gazette, officially adding household, commercial and similar electrical appliances to the BIS mandatory certification list.

According to the notification requirements, this QCO applies to all household, commercial, or similar appliances with a rated voltage not exceeding 250V single-phase AC or 415V three-phase AC and not within the scope of any other quality control orders issued by the Indian Standards Board Act.

01. Exemption from use

QCO does not apply to goods or items produced for export within India.

In addition, the first 200 goods or items imported by electrical manufacturers for scientific research purposes are exempt from BIS mandatory certification.

It is worth noting that such imported goods or items can be disposed of as waste, but cannot be used for commercial purposes, and manufacturers should keep relevant annual records for government agencies to review.

02. Implementation Date

QCO will officially come into effect on March 17, 2025.

In addition, according to the definition in the 2006 Micro, Small and Medium sized Enterprise Development Law, small and micro enterprises that meet the relevant conditions will receive a longer buffer period:

Small businesses: effective from June 17, 2025;

Micro enterprises: effective from September 17, 2025.

*Small businesses: whose factory or machinery investment exceeds 250000 rupees but does not exceed 50 million rupees (if engaged in or providing services, exceeding 100000 rupees but not exceeding 20 million rupees)

*Micro enterprise: Its factory or machinery investment shall not exceed 250000 rupees (if engaged in or providing services, not exceeding 100000 rupees)

03. Example List

Here is an example list of 83 related electrical products and the Indian standards that need to be followed:

For QCO that needs to be enforced, companies need to complete BIS certification before exporting to India to ensure that the products comply with the corresponding Indian standards and mark the standard mark that has been approved by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).

According to the Bureau of Indian Standards Act 2016, any violation of the provisions of the aforementioned order will be subject to punishment.

At present, the Indian market is highly dependent on electrical products made in China. We remind companies that export products to India to pay attention to the implementation status of QCOs and complete BIS mandatory certification in a timely manner to ensure the smooth entry of products into the Indian market.
