The exemption clause for cadmium in the EU RoHS directive will be officially implemented on January 1, 2025.

On May 21, 2024, the European Union published the (EU) 2024/1416 Directive in the official gazette, updating the exemption clause for cadmium in Annex III of the EU RoHS Directive (2011/65/EU), extending the exemption period for Article 39 (a), and adding an exemption for Article 39 (b). This directive shall come into effect 20 days after its publication, and member states shall translate it into their own regulations by December 31, 2024. The exemption shall be officially implemented from January 1, 2025.

 

 

 

The specific updates are as follows:

Article Exemption Scope and Deadline of Application
39(a)

Cadmium selenide in down converted cadmium based semiconductor nanocrystal quantum dots for display lighting applications (with less than 0.2 μ g of cadmium per square millimeter of luminescent region)

Applicable to all types, expiring on November 21, 2025

39(b)

Cadmium (less than 5 ug per square millimeter of LED chip surface) deposited directly on LED semiconductor chips for display and projection applications in down converted semiconductor nanocrystal quantum dots, with a maximum concentration of 1mg per device

Applicable to all types, due on December 31, 2027
