The PFAS ban in New Mexico, USA has come into effect, completely prohibiting the intentional addition of PFAS to consumer goods

The Governor of New Mexico has signed HB 212, the Perfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) Protection Act, which aims to completely ban the intentional addition of PFAS to consumer goods by 2032.
On April 8, 2025, the Governor of New Mexico signed HB 212, the Perfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) Protection Act, which requires a comprehensive ban on intentionally adding PFAS to consumer goods by 2032, except for certain exemptions for certain uses.
New Mexico is currently the third state after Maine and Minnesota to ban the intentional addition of PFAS in all categories of consumer goods.
HB 212 "Perfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) Protection Act": prohibits certain categories of products intentionally containing PFAS, including cookware and food packaging (from January 1, 2027), cosmetics (from January 1, 2028), and all other products (from January 1, 2032).
The exemption scope includes certain medical equipment, semiconductors, non consumer laboratory equipment, motor vehicles, and equipment used for the "manufacturing or development" of items on the exemption list. The law also exempts certain products made from fluoropolymers.
In addition, the law requires products containing intentionally added PFAS to be labeled with the presence of these chemicals.
HB 212 also requires inventory management of fire-fighting foam containing PFAS. Under the new law, these foam can only be used in emergencies. This will prevent these foam from being used in training exercises similar to those related to contamination of aquifers near US air bases.
