Ukraine prohibits triclosan from being used in the manufacture of food contact plastics

In October 2022, the Ministry of Health of Ukraine issued Order 1735/2022 in the official gazette of the country, prohibiting triclosan from being used to manufacture plastic materials and articles in contact with food. The new regulation complies with Commission Decision 2010/169/EU of 19 March 2010. Food contact plastics manufactured by triclosan that are put on the market on or before January 1, 2023 can continue to be sold until January 31, 2024.

Triclosan, with chemical name of 5-chloro-2 - (2 ', 4' - dichlorophenoxy) phenol and chemical formula of C12H7Cl3O2, is an organic compound.

The oral LD50 of triclosan in mice is about 3800mg/kg, which is a low toxic substance. It can be rapidly catabolized in the environment and usually does not cause environmental problems. It is a broad-spectrum antibacterial agent, efficient, safe, and widely used in cosmetics, detergents, medical disinfection and health care products.

Basic Characteristics

There is still a dispute about whether triclosan is carcinogenic to human beings, and there is no sufficient evidence to prove its carcinogenicity to human beings. It was reported in the early stage that long-term exposure to triclosan would induce liver cirrhosis in mice. In 2014, PNAS article again reported that triclosan has the role of a liver tumor promoter, and in 2016, Science magazine also proposed the hepatotoxic effect of triclosan.
