Thailand will restrict fluoropolymer coated appliances

Time:

2022-12-01

In November, Thailand informed the WTO that the "Draft Standard on Fluoropolymer Coated Appliances in Contact with Food (TIS 2622-2556 (2013))" submitted last year had been officially published and would come into force on April 2, 2024.

In November, Thailand informed the WTO that the "Draft Standard on Fluoropolymer Coated Appliances in Contact with Food (TIS 2622-2556 (2013))" submitted last year had been officially published and would come into force on April 2, 2024.

TIS 2622-2556 specifies the scope of application, dimensions, materials, functional requirements, labels and identifications of fluoropolymer coating appliances, as follows:

Scope of application

TIS 2622-2556 is only applicable to appliances made of metal substrate, directly in contact with food and used for heating and cooking. It does not include electric cooking appliances such as air fryers and induction cookers.

Size and error range

The size of the container shall be determined by both the supplier and the demander, but shall be within the+2.5% error range.

Material requirements

The fluorine containing coating material used for containers and appliances must be one of the following materials:

  • teflon;
  • Perfluoroalkoxyalkanes;
  • Tetrafluoroethylene/hexafluoropropylene.

The manufacturer must show the certificate or analysis document of the material issued by the accreditation body of the Office of Industrial Product Standards.

Functional requirements

Appearance

TIS 2622-2556 requires that the coating must be uniform and smooth without pinholes, bubbles, cracks or coating peeling and other defects. There shall be no sharp parts and no harm to users.

Physical and chemical indicators

The physical and chemical index requirements of TIS 2622-2556 for fluorine containing coating are shown in the following table.

Test items Limit
Evaporation residue Volume ≤ 500cm3 or > 10dm3 10 mg/dm2
500cm3 < volume ≤ 10dm3 or contact area cannot be determined 60 mg/kg
Consumption of potassium permanganate 10 mg/dm3
Heavy metals (calculated by lead) 1mg/dm3
Lead content 100mg/kg
Cadmium content 100mg/kg

Physical and mechanical properties

TIS 2622-2556 requires that the coating will not fall off slightly when the test grid area does not exceed 5%, and the maximum tensile force of the coating adhesion does not exceed 3N, hardness, scrub resistance, etc.

Label identification

Each container or appliance must be marked with:

  • Size and capacity;
  • The name, address or registered trademark of the manufacturer;
  • The product name or other meanings in this standard refer to the name of the product in this standard;
  • Coating materials;
  • Maximum service temperature;
  • Production date, month, year or model code;
  • Use methods and precautions.
