Australia fully upgrades energy efficiency regulatory standards for lighting products

Australia has comprehensively upgraded its energy efficiency regulatory standards for lighting products, covering a variety of lighting products such as LED lights and incandescent bulbs.
The Australian government has recently made significant adjustments to the energy efficiency regulatory system for lighting products, introducing a series of new regulatory standards and requirements aimed at accelerating the transformation of the lighting industry towards greater energy efficiency and environmental protection. This regulatory reform covers various lighting products such as LED lights and incandescent bulbs, reflecting Australia's firm determination to address climate change and promote energy transition.
According to the latest regulatory framework, LED light suppliers are required to fully comply with the requirements of the "Greenhouse and Energy Minimum Standards (LED Lights) Decision 2025" by March 3, 2026. The implementation of this new standard will further enhance the energy efficiency level of LED products and promote the innovative development of lighting technology. As one of the most energy-efficient lighting technologies currently available, the widespread use of LED lights is of great significance in reducing energy consumption and carbon emissions. The introduction of new standards will ensure that LED products on the market meet higher quality and energy efficiency standards, providing consumers with better product choices.
The regulation of traditional incandescent lamps will also be significantly tightened. Starting from October 4, 2025, all incandescent lamp suppliers must meet the requirements of the "Greenhouse and Energy Minimum Standards (Incandescent Lamps for General Lighting Services) Decision 2024". As a traditional lighting product with low energy efficiency, incandescent bulbs have seen a continuous decline in market share in recent years. The implementation of the new standards will accelerate the market exit process of incandescent lamps and drive consumers towards more energy-efficient lighting choices.
The regulatory reform of lighting products in Australia is an important component of its overall energy efficiency policy. Lighting accounts for about 15% of global electricity consumption, and improving lighting energy efficiency is of great significance for achieving energy-saving and emission reduction goals.
