Starting from December, Hong Kong, China will completely ban the supply and sale of the following mercury containing products!

The Korea Energy Agency (KEA) has released the MEPS energy efficiency rating certification system, which involves products such as air purifiers and LED lights, and will be implemented in stages. The system requires manufacturers to produce and sell energy-saving products, with labels containing information on light efficiency, power consumption, etc., and applicable regulations are provided in the original text link.
Recently, the Environmental Protection Department (EPD) of Hong Kong, China announced that the provision in the Mercury Control Regulations prohibiting the supply and sale of controlled mercury containing products will come into effect on December 1 this year, in order to reduce the impact of anthropogenic emissions of mercury and its compounds on the environment.
The implementation of the Mercury Control Ordinance aims to fully implement the Minamata Convention in Hong Kong, regulate the import, export, storage, and use of mercury and its mixtures and compounds, and also involve the import, export, and production of mercury containing products. The upcoming ban will prompt relevant industries to shift towards safe mercury free alternative products.
Mercury is a naturally occurring heavy metal, but its high toxicity poses a serious threat to ecosystems and human health. The Environmental Protection Department emphasizes that starting from December 1st this year, Hong Kong will completely ban the supply and sale of the following mercury containing products:
·Battery
·Switches and relays
·Compact fluorescent lamp
·Straight tube fluorescent lamp
·High pressure mercury vapor lamp
·Cold cathode fluorescent lamps and external electrode fluorescent lamps used for electronic displays
·Cosmetics with mercury content exceeding 1 ppm
·Insecticides and external disinfectants
·Non electronic measuring devices (thermometers, sphygmomanometers, barometers, etc.)
At present, the vast majority of regulated mercury containing products in the Hong Kong market have been largely phased out, and there are already sufficient mercury free alternatives available in the market. In addition, there are no local manufacturers using mercury or its compounds in production, so it is expected that the impact of this regulation on the public and industry will be very limited.
The Environmental Protection Agency has conveyed information about the ban to suppliers, sellers, and chambers of commerce by sending letters to enhance industry understanding and compliance with regulations. In order to assist in handling the remaining inventory of regulated mercury containing products, the Environmental Protection Agency will provide free collection and processing services. Related businesses can apply for this service from the Environmental Protection Agency between December 2, 2024 and January 17, 2025 to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
