Japan announces ban on production of ten mercury containing products

Japan has revised the "Mercury Pollution Prevention Environmental Law" and added a list of ten restricted mercury products, which will be phased in from 2026 onwards, including products such as batteries, lighting equipment, and industrial sensors.
Recently, the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and the Japanese Ministry of Environment jointly issued a notice G/TBT/N/JPN/819 through the WTO, revising the "Prevention of Mercury Pollution Environmental Law" and adding a list of ten specific mercury using products. Starting from January 1, 2026, restrictions will be implemented in stages, involving various types of batteries and lighting equipment, as well as specific industrial sensors.
