Japan has approved the use restriction of perfluorohexane sulfonic acid (PFHxS)

2021

In 2021, Japan banned the use of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and its salts in 13 types of products.

2023

On December 1, 2023, various Japanese ministries issued Cabinet Order No. 343 of 2023 to revise bills such as the Chemical Substances Evaluation and Manufacturer Supervision Act, and to limit the use of perfluorohexane sulfonic acid (PFHxS), its salts, and its isomers in certain products in accordance with recommendations.
This command will take effect on February 1, 2024.

2024

Starting from June 1, 2024, if the following products contain perfluorohexane sulfonic acid (PFHxS), its salts, and its isomers, they will be prohibited from being imported:

(1) Water and oil resistant textiles;

(2) Etching agents for metal processing purposes;

(3) Etching agents used for manufacturing semiconductors;

(4) Surface treatment agents for electroplating or preparation purposes;

(5) Anti reflective agents used in semiconductor manufacturing processes;

(6) Semiconductor resistance;

(7) Waterproof agents, anti haze oil, and fiber protectants;

(8) Fire extinguishers, extinguishing agents, and extinguishing foam;

(9) Waterproof and oil resistant clothing;

(10) Waterproof and oil proof ground cover.

Harm

Perfluorohexanesulfonic acid (PFHxS), its salts, and its isomers

Perfluorohexanesulfonic acid (PFHxS) is a type of perfluorinated and polyfluoroalkyl compound (PFAS).

This type of substance has various toxic properties such as accumulation, reproductive toxicity, mutagenic toxicity, developmental toxicity, neurotoxicity, immunotoxicity, etc. It is not easy to decompose and has serious impacts on the environment and human body. Currently, countries are gradually controlling such compounds.
