The new version of IEC 62321-3-1:2026 standard has been released as the core screening standard for RoHS compliance verification in the electronic and electrical industry. This update expands the screening elements from 5 to 9, while maintaining the technical framework of X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF) analysis.

On May 6, 2026, the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) officially released the new standard IEC 62321-3-1:2026. As a core screening standard for RoHS compliance verification in the electrical and electronic industry, this update significantly enhances the scope of screened elements and analytical performance while maintaining the technical framework of X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF). It fully replaces and supersedes the first edition IEC 62321-3-1:2013 published in 2013, as well as the relevant content in IEC 62321:2008.

 Standard Overview

 

 

The IEC 62321 series of standards is an important testing method internationally used to detect harmful substances in electronic and electrical products, and is also an important basis for RoHS, corporate environmental control, and supply chain compliance testing.

 

IEC 62321-3-1:2026 uses X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF) for rapid screening and detection of specific substances in homogeneous materials of electronic and electrical products. XRF has the advantages of no need to destroy samples, fast detection speed, and low cost, and is commonly used in electronic components, plastic parts, metal parts, ceramic materials, wires, etc PCB、 Preliminary risk assessment of materials such as shells and coatings.

 Core technology changes: The number of screening elements has been expanded from 5 to 9

 

 

Compared to the 2013 version, which only covers five elements: lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd), total chromium (Cr), and total bromine (Br), the new version of the standard adds nine new elements, including total phosphorus (P), total chlorine (Cl), total tin (Sn), and total antimony (Sb), based on the original screening elements. This is the most significant technological change in this revision.

 

The risk implications of adding new elements are clear:

  • Total phosphorus (P): may be related to phosphorus based flame retardants such as tri (2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP);
  • Total chlorine (Cl): may be related to chlorinated compounds such as short chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCP), TCEP, and tributyltin chloride (TBTC);
  • Total tin (Sn): can serve as a risk indicator for specific organotin compounds;
  • Total antimony (Sb): may be related to antimony based flame retardant materials such as antimony lead yellow (CAS 8012-00-8).

 

These newly added elements may not directly represent the presence of prohibited substances in the product, but they can serve as important clues for assessing potential risks of regulated compounds. The selection of new elements is based on IEC TR 62936:2016.
