Vacuum cleaners and water absorbing cleaning appliances IEC 60335-2-2026 new standard update, expanded scope, with these technical changes →

The latest standard IEC 60335-2-2:2026 "Safety of household and similar electrical appliances - Part 2-2: Special requirements for vacuum cleaners and water absorbing cleaning appliances" has been released, replacing IEC 60335-2-2:2019. The product range has been expanded and technical requirements have been changed.

On July 15, 2026, the National Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) released the latest version of IEC 60335-2-2:2026 "Safety of household and similar electrical appliances - Part 2-2: Special requirements for vacuum cleaners and water absorbing cleaning appliances", replacing IEC 60335-2-2:2019.

Scope of Application

IEC 60335-2-2:2026 relates to the safety of electric vacuum cleaners and water absorbing cleaning appliances for household and similar purposes, with a rated voltage not exceeding 250 V for single-phase (AC) power supply appliances, direct current (DC) power supply appliances, and battery powered appliances, and 480 V for multiphase centralized vacuum cleaners.

This standard also applies to pet grooming vacuum cleaners, centralized vacuum cleaners, and automatic battery powered cleaning appliances.

This standard also applies to spray cleaning equipment, where

The pressure of the liquid solution used shall not exceed 2.5 MPa;
The product of pressure (in MPa) and liquid solution flow rate (in liters per minute) shall not exceed 100; and
The temperature of the liquid solution at the nozzle outlet shall not exceed 60 ° C.

This standard also applies to vacuum cleaners and water absorbing cleaning equipment equipped with blowing or inflating functions.

This standard also applies to electric cleaning heads and conductive hoses related to specific vacuum cleaners or suction cleaning equipment.

Major Technical Changes

The new version contains the following significant technical changes compared to the previous version:

Compliant with IEC 60335-1:2020;
Convert some annotations into normative text (Article 1);
Include multiphase central vacuum cleaners in the scope (Article 1);
Include appliances with blowing or inflating functions in the scope (Article 1, 3.1.9, 3.8.102, 3.8.103, 7.12);
Clearly identify purposes similar to household use (Article 1, 7.12);
Add test probe 19 to prevent contact with live parts (8.1.1, B.22.3, B.22.4);
Move the replacement content from 19.9 to 19.106;
Clearly, stability testing is not applicable to instruments that are handheld and supported by the ground during normal use, unless they are equipped with a bracket or base (20.1);
Allow the use of detachable power components in flexible cables (6.2, 21.107, 21.108, 24.2);
Clearly define remote operation requirements (22.40, 22.49, 22.51, Appendix B 22.40);
Increase requirements for the power cord of automatic battery driven cleaners (25.7);
Add overload testing for automatic battery driven cleaning machine brushes and traction motors (B.19.101);
Clarified the requirements for docking stations (30.2);
Added requirements for spray extraction equipment (Article 1, 3.1.9.104, 3.5.105, 5.102, 7.12);
Clarify the requirements for equipment with sockets or sockets (19.1, 19.107, 22.61, 25.8);
Added requirements for equipment that can overfill water storage tanks (15.2).
