The new version of ISO 9001:2026 "Quality Management System Requirements" has been officially released, with certificate updates and compliance interpretations

The new version of ISO 9001:2026 "Quality Management System Requirements" was officially released on September 16, 2026, with a 3-year transition period until September 15, 2029. During this period, companies can complete the version change through supervision audits or re certification audits. After September 15, 2029, all 2015 certificates will become completely invalid, and companies must hold the 2026 certification certificate.
On September 16, 2026, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) officially released ISO 9001:2026 "Quality management systems — Requirements" (6th edition) on its official website. This is the first systematic iterative upgrade completed after more than a decade of industry practice accumulation since the implementation of the ISO 9001:2015 version.
Over 1 million organizations worldwide are currently using the ISO 9001 system. The new version is no longer limited to product quality control, but makes systematic updates in response to the modern business environment, such as climate change, quality culture, ethical behavior, digital technology, and risk and opportunity management, which will bring profound impacts to enterprises across all industries, including manufacturing, services, and trade.

After the release of the new version, the official has set a three-year transition period: September 16, 2026 – September 15, 2029. During the transition period, the 2015 version certificates are legally valid and can be used normally for bidding, factory audits, and customer audits; after September 15, 2029, all 2015 version certificates will uniformly and completely expire, and enterprises must hold the 2026 version certification certificates.
Important Changes in the New Version of ISO 9001
As the sixth edition of the world's leading quality management standard, ISO 9001:2026 is built upon a framework trusted by over a million organizations globally, and has been specifically updated to improve usability and ensure continued relevance in the rapidly evolving digital landscape.
ISO 9001:2026 was published on September 16, 2026, with a focus on improving clarity to help organizations of all sizes, maturities, and purposes better understand the requirements. It emphasizes the importance of quality culture and leadership, and separates risks from opportunities to ensure that organizations can take proactive actions to pursue beneficial outcomes. Furthermore, through better alignment with other ISO management system standards, integrating ISO 9001 into an organization's existing management system has become easier than ever, regardless of size or industry.
The new edition fully retains the ten-chapter logical framework of the High-Level Structure, while providing targeted responses to real-world needs that have emerged in global industrial operations over the past decade, such as digital transformation, supply chain risk prevention and control, and sustainable development. It formally incorporates content long considered supplementary issues, such as building organizational resilience and addressing uncertainty, into the core scope of constraints of the quality management system, driving the positioning of the system from a traditional compliance-oriented approach to a comprehensive strategic value-oriented approach that supports the long-term stable operation of organizations.
New Version Core Changes
Strengthen the governance of quality culture and ethical behavior
The new version formally incorporates quality culture, values, and ethical behavior into the standard requirements. It explicitly requires top management to promote the quality culture and be responsible for the ethical behavior of the organization. This means that quality is no longer just "the quality department's business," but must be implemented across all employees through systems, training, incentives, and assessments; audits will focus on whether the enterprise has clear quality values, and whether it has anti-fraud and integrity control mechanisms.
Climate change, officially enters organizational environmental analysis
The new version integrates the climate amendment of ISO 9001:2015/Amd 1:2024, requiring organizations to determine whether climate change is relevant to them and to identify the climate-related needs of interested parties. For agricultural product processing, manufacturing, logistics, and supply chain enterprises, raw material supply disruptions, warehouse damage, and delivery delays caused by extreme weather must all be included in the risk register and aligned with ESG requirements.
Risks and opportunities are managed separately and independently
The 2015 version combined the two into a single statement, while the new version splits them into independent sub-clauses: not only to identify and prevent risks, but also to actively identify business opportunities: process improvement, digital upgrading, new markets, and new customers, and to evaluate the implementation results of these opportunities. This is a mindset upgrade from "avoiding trouble" to "seizing opportunities".
Strengthen supply chain and operations monitoring
The new version strengthens the control over external suppliers and outsourced processes, requiring organizations to have the resilience to respond to supply chain disruptions, rather than relying solely on the list of qualified suppliers.
Enhance the effectiveness of change management
Changes to systems, processes, products, and resources require evaluating their impact on expected outcomes, rather than just making "change records".
Knowledge management emphasizes sharing rather than hoarding
Organizational knowledge is no longer limited to "knowing what exists"; it emphasizes more on flowing, precipitating, and reusing among teams.
Focus on the goal setting of internal audits and enhance the attention to the input of management reviews
Internal audit requires setting clear objectives; the inputs to management review are more focused on system effectiveness, progress of risks and opportunities, and changes in stakeholders.
Appendix A provides clarification notes
A new informative Appendix A is added to explain and clarify core terms and clause intentions, reducing ambiguity in understanding the standard, especially facilitating small and medium-sized enterprises and system novices to correctly implement the standard requirements, and reducing the pitfall of excessive documentation.
Greater synergy with other ISO management systems
Optimize the text expression and further align it with high-level structure management standards such as ISO 14001 and ISO 45001, making it easier for enterprises to build an integrated management system.
Enterprise Action Recommendations
Currently, ISO 9001 6th edition was officially released on September 16, 2026, with a 3-year transition period set until September 15, 2029. During this period, enterprises can complete the transition through surveillance audits or recertification audits, and ISO 9001:2015 certificates will expire after the transition period ends. It is recommended that enterprises immediately initiate the following preparatory work:
- Verify existing gap analysis: Utilize existing tools to assess the compliance of the current management system with the new standard.
- Develop a transition timetable: Clarify the key milestones for training, process adjustments, and certification applications.
- Focus on professional guidance resources: Seek professional support from authoritative institutions to ensure the transition work proceeds efficiently.
