California approved the restriction of PFAS in vegetable food packaging and the disclosure of chemical substances used in cooking utensils
The Governor of California has approved Act AB1200, which prohibits the use of perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in vegetable food packaging, and requires the disclosure of chemical substances used in cooking utensils.
It is prohibited to use PFAS in vegetable food packaging
From January 1, 2023, it is prohibited to distribute, sell or provide for sale any food packaging containing controlled PFAS in California. The applicable food packaging is composed of paper, cardboard or other materials originally derived from plant fibers. The substitute of such packaging PFAS should be the least toxic.
Disclosure of chemicals in cooking utensils

From January 1, 2024, if the cookware sold in California contains one or more intentionally added chemicals on the designated list on the handle of the cooker or any surface in contact with food, the existence of these chemicals shall be indicated on the product label.
The label should begin with "This product contains:" followed by a list of intentionally added chemicals. In addition, the following statement should also be included: "For more information about the chemical substances in this product, please visit", followed by the following two items:
The above labels shall be in English and Spanish, clearly visible to consumers, and included in the list of products sold online. There are some exemptions for cookware to comply with labeling requirements.

From January 1, 2023, cookware sold in California shall disclose the following information if the handle of the cooker or any surface in contact with food contains one or more intentionally added chemicals on the designated list:
List of chemicals in the designated list contained in the cooker.
The name of the authoritative list referred to by the Toxic Substances Control Department when preparing the designated list.
The Internet address of the above list.

From January 1, 2023 on the Internet website, and from January 1, 2024 on the packaging of cookers, if the chemical substances belong to the chemical groups or categories determined on the designated list, it shall not be claimed that the cooker does not contain any specific chemical substances.
Note:
PFAS: Fluorinated organic chemical substance containing at least one completely fluorinated carbon atom.
Food packaging: including food or beverage containers, takeaway food containers, unit product boxes, linings, wrapping paper, service containers, tableware, straws, food boxes and disposable plates, bowls or trays.
Cookware: Durable household items used in families and restaurants to prepare, distribute, or store food, food, or beverages. "Cookware" includes pots, pans, frying pans, grills, baking pans, baking moulds, trays, bowls and cooking utensils.
Designated list: the list of chemical substances that have been identified as candidate chemical substances, and these chemicals show that they meet the hazard characteristics or environmental or toxicological endpoint standards specified in the regulations passed by the Ministry of Toxic Substances Control.
