GB/T 31122-2026 "Paperboard for Food Packaging" has been released and will be implemented on March 1, 2027

GB/T 31122-2026 "Paperboard for Food Packaging" will be implemented on March 1, 2027, merging and replacing two old standards GB/T 31122-2014 "Paperboard for Liquid Food Packaging" and GB/T 31123-2014 "Paperboard for Solid Food Packaging".

Recently, the State Administration for Market Regulation and the Standardization Administration of China issued Announcement No. 38 of 2026, approving 271 recommended national standards including "Paperboard for Food Packaging". Among them, "Paperboard for Food Packaging" (GB/T 31122-2026) will be implemented on March 1, 2027.

"Paperboard for Food Packaging" will merge and replace the contents of two old standards, GB/T 31122-2014 "Paperboard for Liquid Food Packaging" and GB/T 31123-2014 "Paperboard for Solid Food Packaging". This revision optimizes and improves the index requirements for paperboard for food packaging, which helps to promote the improvement of product quality and performance.

Scope of Application

Applicable to the production, inspection and sales of paperboard for liquid food packaging and paperboard for solid food packaging.

Paperboard for liquid food packaging: Paperboard used to manufacture paper-based composite materials for liquid food packaging.

Paperboard for solid food packaging: Paperboard used to manufacture packaging materials that come into direct contact with solid food.(Note:Paperboard for solid food packaging is mainly used for packaging solid foods such as French fries and fried chicken.)

Inapplicable Scope

Not applicable to paper cup original paper, paper bowl original paper, and food container original paper.

Paperboard for liquid food packaging: intrinsic quality requirements (grammage, grammage deviation, cross-direction grammage difference, tightness, cross-direction thickness difference, Bendtsen roughness, D65 brightness, printing surface roughness, edge penetration quality, internal bond strength, stiffness, folding endurance, dustiness, delivery moisture content), dimensions, dimensional deviation and skewness, number of joints and color, appearance quality, printing quality, etc.

Paperboard for solid food packaging: intrinsic quality requirements (grammage, grammage deviation, cross-direction grammage difference, tightness, D65 brightness, smoothness, printing surface roughness, water absorption, oil resistance, internal bond strength, stiffness, folding endurance, dustiness, delivery moisture content), dimensions, dimensional deviation and skewness, number of joints and color, appearance quality, printing quality, etc.
