European Commission Suggests Revising Detergent Regulations

The European Commission has issued a revised version of the detergent regulations, proposing general standards for the use of microorganisms in detergents, labeling requirements, certain restrictions on the use of microorganisms, and review clauses.
On April 28, 2023, the European Commission issued a revised version of the detergent regulations, proposing general standards for the use of microorganisms in detergents, labeling requirements, certain restrictions on the use of microorganisms, and review clauses.
According to the new regulations on digital labels, companies will be allowed to retain all refillable product labels in digital format, excluding dosage instructions for consumer laundry detergent. Pre packaged products must retain some mandatory information on physical labels, but the company will be allowed to convert certain details into digital format. The proposal also includes the introduction of product passports, which need to be presented at customs when detergents and surfactants appear at EU borders. The proposal will abolish several requirements that the committee has described as "unnecessary or unnecessary". This includes providing:
- Obligation to provide data sheets for hazardous detergent ingredients;
- Mandatory intervention from approved laboratories that must conduct testing in accordance with regulations;
- The possibility of reducing the requirements for surfactants that do not meet the final biodegradability standards;
- Obligations of manufacturers of cleaning agents and surfactants within the European Union.
