The EU plans to ban the use of "silver copper zeolite" as a food contact material, which will affect the production of food related enterprises

The European Commission has recently issued a draft implementation decision, which opposes the use of silver copper zeolite as an active substance in product type 4 fungicide products. This decision is in accordance with Regulation (EU) No 528/2012 of the European Parliament and Council.

Application of silver copper zeolite

Previously, the antibacterial effect of silver copper zeolite was believed to mainly come from its silver and copper ions. These two ions have broad-spectrum antibacterial activity and can inhibit the growth of various bacteria, fungi, and viruses.
By releasing these ions, silver copper zeolite can effectively inhibit the growth of pathogenic bacteria and spoilage microorganisms in food, and extend the shelf life of food. In food packaging, silver copper zeolite is commonly used in the production of antibacterial packaging materials, storage containers, and tableware.

Safety risks of silver copper zeolite

The draft decision outlines that the efficacy of silver copper zeolite has not been fully demonstrated based on its intended use, including the incorporation of this substance into food contact materials. Extensive testing and research have shown that consuming food in contact with treated polymers containing silver copper zeolite poses potential safety risks to the human body. However, appropriate measures have not yet been determined to address these risks.
Therefore, in order to ensure human safety and protect human health, the European Union has decided not to approve silver copper zeolite as an existing active substance for use in sterilization products belonging to product type 4, which mainly includes products used in the food and feed fields.

EU to Strengthen Regulation

The EU aims to maintain the highest efficacy and safety standards for biocide products used within its jurisdiction. This decision reflects a commitment to thoroughly evaluate and strictly regulate the use of active substances and their use in biocide products.
