New requirements for electromagnetic compatibility immunity of lighting equipment in Europe

The European Electrotechnical Standardization Commission (CENELEC) released EN IEC 61547:2023 in April 2023. This new standard replaces the old standard EN 61547:2009 and has undergone technical revisions.

 

Applicable country or region: The country or region where CE certification is applicable

Implementation date: December 8, 2023

Enforcement date: March 8, 2026

 

Applicable scope

Lighting equipment: Equipment with the main function of generating and/or regulating and/or distributing light radiation. For example:

  • Light sources and fixtures;
  • The lighting part of the functional equipment, one of its main functions is lighting;
  • Modules, such as ELV lights, self ballasting lights, and control devices;
  • Radiation equipment for ultraviolet (UV) and infrared (IR) radiation

 

Important technical updates

  • Expand the scope of end-user replaceable modules, as well as the combination of end-user replaceable modules and independent auxiliary modules;
  • Add instructions for module testing in the host system;
  • Improve the ESD and surge testing levels of road and street lighting equipment;
  • Introduce ESD testing under normal working and handheld conditions;
  • Remove the line to ground surge test of ≤ 25 W self ballasted lamps.
