The UK has released a new version of the household plug and socket series standard BS 1363-X:2023, which will officially replace the previous version of BS 1363-X:2016+A1:2018 on June 30, 2026

New standard update content

Compared to the old version of the standard, the new BS 1363-X: 2023 series of standards have undergone the following important technical updates:

Series standard BS 1363-X (1-5): 2023 Unified changes include:

Rated frequency parameters cover 50Hz and 60Hz

Current carrying parts with a minimum copper content of 58%

In insulation resistance and voltage withstand tests, it is allowed to disconnect the indicator light and built-in electronic components for testing.

Add requirements for testing the breaking operating force of double break switches, considering three different state templates for testing.

Explanation of adding requirements for a single stationary position of a button switch

Special changes to BS 1363-1:2023:

The built-in electronic switch type plug allows a rated voltage of 230V, 240V or 250V

Add requirements for creepage and electrical clearance of fuses and fuse clips to the interface of plugs

The plug that cannot be swapped during overload testing requires testing with the maximum rated fuse that can be used for the corresponding wire diameter. The swappable plug should be tested with a 13A fuse.

Add Appendix B to recommend plug testing requirements for inline products.

Special changes to BS 1363-2:2023:

Add requirements for sockets with equipment circuit breakers

Definition and testing requirements for newly added independent protective sockets (IPS)

Socket switches should not be used for electronic components other than switch indicator lights

Revised the clearance requirements for concealed socket installation boxes

Switches in sockets that comply with BS EN IEC 61058:2018 or BS EN 60669-1:2018 do not require repeated normal operation tests.

Modify the attachment's requirements for sockets with electronic components. The USB circuit for charging portable devices has added abnormal condition testing and energy efficiency requirements.

Added Appendix I recommending random testing requirements for equipment sockets.

Special changes to BS 1363-3:2013:

Add restrictions on the number of sockets on the same plane

Modify the specifications for the rated current parameters of the converter
