EU Expands the Prohibition List of Mercury Containing Products

Starting from January 1, 2026, the list of mercury containing products that are prohibited from being exported, imported, and manufactured in the European Union will be further expanded.
The European Commission plans to further expand the list of mercury containing products that are prohibited from being exported, imported, and manufactured in the EU starting from January 1, 2026. This will align EU legislation with the Minamata Convention on Mercury and help phase out the use of mercury in these products globally, thereby providing further protection for the environment and human health.
Recently, the Official Journal of the European Union issued Regulation (EU) 2023/2049, which supplements the EU Regulation (EU) 2017/852. Part A of Annex II to EU Regulation 2017/852 lists mercury containing products that are prohibited from import, export, and production. The following items are proposed to be added to this list:

Background - Regarding Regulation (EU) 2017/852
On May 24, 2017, the Official Journal of the European Union officially released Regulation (EU) 2017/852, which sets out requirements for the manufacturing, use, storage, and trade of metallic mercury, mercury compounds, mercury mixtures, and mercury additive products, and adds management methods for mercury waste to protect human health and the environment from the adverse effects of mercury and mercury compounds.
