India strengthens quality control: Five polymer products must obtain mandatory certification

On December 6, 2023, the central government of India officially issued a Quality Control Order (QCO) in the official gazette, covering the five polymer products listed in the table below, marking the Indian government's continued commitment to improving the quality of domestic products. This is an important decision made after consultation with the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).

Prior to this, on September 13, 2023, TBT issued a solicitation notice regarding the inclusion of these five polymer products and nine other commodities in the BIS mandatory certification list. After a four month period for collecting opinions, the government made corresponding decisions based on feedback.

The quality control order announced this time will officially come into effect 180 days after the official announcement. This order applies to the goods listed in the announcement, but not to goods specifically produced for export. The included goods must comply with the Indian standards specified in the announcement and use the Indian Bureau of Standards standard logo in accordance with the 2018 Indian Bureau of Standards (Qualification Mark) regulations. The Indian Bureau of Standards is the certification and enforcement agency for designated goods. According to this new regulation, products included must obtain mandatory certification from BIS, otherwise they cannot be manufactured, sold or imported.
