The United States proposes a bill to ban the intentional addition of PFAS in food packaging, as it is highly toxic and difficult to degrade, posing a threat to the environment and health. Starting from January 1, 2025, food packaging containing PFAS will be prohibited in interstate trade.

The US Congress proposed H. in September 2024 R. The 9864 Act, also known as the 2024 Food Container Ban PFAS Act, prohibits intentionally added PFAS in food packaging.

According to the proposal, Section 31 of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (21 USC 331) will be revised to add a provision prohibiting the introduction or delivery of food packaging containing intentionally added PFAS in interstate commerce from January 1, 2025.

In this proposal, "PFAS" refers to artificial perfluoroalkyl or polyfluoroalkyl substances containing at least one perfluorocarbon atom.

The full English name of PFAS is Per and polyfluoroalkyl substances, and the Chinese names are perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl compounds. It is a general term for a series of synthetic organic fluorides, which can be high molecular weight polymers in gas, liquid, or solid forms. There are over 10000 known PFAS compounds, including PFOA, PFOS, C9-C14PFCAs, PFHxA, PFHxS, and others.

Due to its strong heat resistance, oil resistance, and water resistance, PFAS is widely used in food packaging, tableware coatings, and other products. PFAS can be transferred from packaging to food, especially when the food contains oils, salts, or acidic substances, which can lead to direct exposure when consumed. When discarded, packaging containing PFAS may contaminate water sources and soil through landfills, or diffuse into the air during incineration. PFAS are highly toxic, highly destructive, and not easily biodegradable, posing a significant threat to the environment and human health.

Jiayu Testing can provide FCM food contact material testing services for manufacturers of food contact products sold to countries such as the United States, China, the European Union and its member states (France, Italy, Germany, etc.), Japan, South Korea, etc., to ensure that the products comply with regulatory requirements in various countries.
