Stockholm Convention adds long-chain perfluorocarboxylic acids to POPs list

The Stockholm Convention includes long-chain perfluorocarboxylic acids and the toxic pesticide chlorpyrifos in the list of POPs.

On May 2, 2025, long-chain perfluorocarboxylic acids (LC-PFCAs) belonging to the PFAS family and the toxic pesticide chlorpyrifos were added to the list of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) by member states of the Stockholm Convention's Conference of the Parties (SC COP-12). From January 1, 2026, theoretically, their production and manufacturing should be prohibited globally.

Long chain perfluorocarboxylic acid

Long chain perfluorocarbonic acid and its salts and related compounds, a category of "permanent chemicals" - perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), have been widely used in a series of industrial and consumer goods, including food packaging, fire foam, waterproof textiles, etc.

PFCAs do not degrade in natural environments and accumulate in protein rich tissues. They can enter the human fetus through the placenta and be transferred to the infant's body through breast milk. Long chain PFCAs can be transported remotely and are pollutants that threaten drinking water sources, public health, and the occupational health of firefighters.

POPs regulations

Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) are a type of natural or synthetic organic pollutant that has long-term persistence, bioaccumulation, semi volatility, and high toxicity, and can migrate over long distances through various environmental media (atmosphere, water, organisms, etc.), posing serious hazards to human health and the environment.
