Updated IEC 60335-2-24 standard for refrigeration appliances, ice cream machines, and ice making machine products

The International Electrotechnical Commission has released the 9th edition of IEC 60335-2-24:2025, Safety of household and similar electrical appliances - Part 2: Special requirements for refrigeration appliances, ice cream makers, and ice makers.
In March 2025, the International Electrotechnical Commission released the 9th edition of IEC 60335-2-24:2025, Safety of household and similar electrical appliances - Part 2: Special requirements for refrigeration appliances, ice cream makers, and ice makers.
The newly released 9th edition of IEC 60335-2-24:2025 will be used in conjunction with the 6th edition of IEC 60335-1 Ed 6.0.
The main changes in this standard are as follows:
- The scope of application has been updated to include new requirements for the labeling, instructions, abnormal testing, mechanical strength, and other aspects of mobile refrigeration appliances, as well as refrigeration appliances used in recreational vehicles and ships. It has also been clarified that outdoor appliances, except for mobile refrigeration appliances with IPX4 or higher waterproof rating, are not within the scope of this standard.
- Updated normative reference documents and related texts, clarifying that the compressor standard reference version is the 7th edition of IEC 60335-2-34:2024.
- The definitions of normal operation of refrigeration appliances, normal operation of ice making machines, normal operation of built-in ice making machines, and normal operation of ice cream machines have been deleted and replaced with the general testing conditions in clause 5.104 of the test.
- Change the design pressure to the maximum allowable pressure.
- Portable and mobile refrigeration appliances, except for those with IPX4 or higher waterproof rating, should be marked with a symbol indicating that they are kept away from rainwater.
- The instruction manual has added a new requirement that the expected use of the equipment should be clearly stated, and for equipment other than portable and mobile refrigerators, instructions have been added that they cannot be moved during normal operation.
- Introduced the application of testing probes Probe 18 and Probe 19 in electric shock protection and protection of moving parts.
- A new abnormal test has been introduced for appliances with frost free evaporator systems, simulating that the user forgets to close the appliance door, causing the door to slightly open, and humid air leading to abnormal growth of ice/frost and affecting the insulation of electrical components. Specific testing requirements are specified in clause 19.106.
- New requirements have been introduced for the assessment of non hazardous moving parts, as specified in clause 20.2.
- Additional requirements for mechanical strength have been added to the refrigeration equipment used on board, such as vibration, impact, and rust resistance. Specific testing methods and requirements can be found in Appendix FF.
- The scope of pressure testing for refrigeration systems in clause 22.7 has been updated, and the restriction on the use of flammable refrigerants has been removed, which means that all compression type appliances should undergo this pressure test for the relevant parts that can withstand pressure.
- A new exemption condition has been added to the material requirement Cl. 22.117 for packages that come into contact with insulation materials, which includes components inside the insulation materials.
- Clarified the requirements for the motor compressor system and specified the temperature rise testing requirements for the compressor winding.
- Clarified the requirements for remote operation of refrigeration appliances.
- Added assessment requirements for light radiation hazards.
