Evaporative air coolers play a crucial role in the Indian refrigeration market, with an annual sales volume of over 10 million units, widely used in various places such as residential, office, and factory. Compared with traditional air conditioners, evaporative coolers have advantages such as low energy consumption, low cost, and environmental friendliness, making them particularly suitable for the dry and hot climate conditions in most parts of India. However, the quality of products in the market varies greatly, and there are significant differences in energy efficiency levels, which poses challenges for consumers in their choices.
The launch of the BEE star rating label program is timely. This plan adopts the internationally recognized five-star energy efficiency rating system, with higher star ratings indicating better product energy efficiency. Through intuitive star ratings, consumers can easily identify and choose energy-efficient products, reducing their electricity bills while enjoying coolness. It is estimated that choosing a five-star product can save up to 30% of electricity consumption compared to a one star product.
To ensure the smooth implementation of the plan, BEE has opened a dedicated star tag portal website. Starting from June 1, 2025, manufacturers and traders can submit applications, upload product testing reports and related technical information through this platform. BEE will evaluate based on unified energy efficiency standards, and qualified products will receive corresponding star certification and label usage rights. The entire application process has been digitized and transparent, greatly improving the efficiency of certification.
The voluntary certification program launched this time reflects the Indian government's progressive policy approach. Guiding enterprises to actively participate through market mechanisms not only gives the industry sufficient adaptation time, but also forces industrial upgrading through consumer choices. It is expected that with the deepening implementation of the plan and the improvement of consumer awareness, it may become mandatory standards in the future. The energy efficiency improvement space of evaporative coolers is enormous. By adopting efficient motors, optimizing air duct design, and improving water circulation systems, the energy efficiency of the new generation of products can be significantly improved. Some leading companies have begun to apply IoT technology to their products to achieve intelligent control and optimized operation, further reducing energy consumption.
In recent years, the Indian government has taken a series of measures to promote energy efficiency, including the promotion of LED light bulbs and the improvement of air conditioning energy efficiency standards, which have achieved significant results.
