Australia releases new technical specifications for household and commercial catering equipment, which have officially come into effect

Australia has released a new version of the Technical Specification for Household and Commercial Catering Equipment, which specifies the minimum product requirements for household and commercial catering equipment connected to water services and sanitary piping systems.

On October 8, 2025, Australia issued a new version of the Technical Specification for Household and Commercial Catering Equipment (WMTS-101:2025) through WTO notification. This specification was released by the Australian Building Code Board under the Australian Department of Finance and will officially come into effect on August 29, 2025, to replace the 2021 version. The document specifies the minimum product requirements for household and commercial catering equipment connected to water services and sanitation piping systems to ensure compliance with the certification standards of the Australian Pipeline Code (PCA).

Applicable product scope

This specification applies to household and commercial catering equipment connected to water supply or drainage systems but not directly providing drinking water, including commercial washing machines, dishwashers, steam generators, humidifiers, foot baths and hydrotherapy equipment, food preparation and insulation equipment, etc.

Technical requirements

01. In terms of structure and design

The product should have the ability to seal and connect with AS 3688 standard accessories, and if necessary, be equipped with a backflow protection device that complies with AS/NZS 2845.1 standard.

02. Water quality and hygiene requirements

The components of the protective device that come into contact with drinking water upstream must comply with the AS/NZS 4020 standard, and the components used for food processing downstream can be evaluated for material safety with reference to international standards such as NSF/ANSI 51.

03. In terms of performance testing

The equipment must remain sealed under maximum working pressure and temperature conditions, without leakage or failure, and undergo tests for pressure resistance, sealing, and backflow protection performance.

04. Document and Identification Requirements

The product should permanently indicate the anti backflow method in a prominent position, and attach installation instructions, drainage conditions, water parameters, wastewater discharge temperature and other data. Manufacturers are required to provide installation steps, debugging programs, and contact information for after-sales service.

05. Qualification assessment method

Appendix A further specifies the qualification assessment methods, including the frequency and project requirements for type testing, batch release inspection, annual supervision and re evaluation testing, to ensure that the product continues to meet the qualification and consistency requirements under the WaterMark certification program.
