New Zealand revises its greenhouse and energy minimum standards for washing machines, rotary dryers, and dishwashers. The new energy efficiency standards will officially come into effect on January 1, 2026.

On November 10, 2025, New Zealand issued the Energy Efficiency (Energy Use Products) Amendment Regulations 2025 through the WTO, which set minimum greenhouse and energy standards for washing machines, rotary dryers, and dishwashers in New Zealand. The regulation will officially come into effect on January 1, 2026.

In order to align relevant regulations with Australia, on September 25, 2023, the New Zealand Energy Efficiency and Protection Agency (EECA) issued a notification through the WTO recommending revisions to the greenhouse and energy minimum standards for washing machines, rotary dryers, and dishwashers in New Zealand (Notification No. G/TBT/N/NLZ/128), based on the Trans Tasman Sea Equipment Energy Efficiency (E3) scheme.

In New Zealand and Australia, the Greenhouse and Energy Minimum Standards (GEMS) are energy efficiency regulations implemented for high energy consuming products such as air conditioners, refrigerators, dishwashers, lighting products, etc., requiring products to meet the minimum energy efficiency standards, which are mandatory.

The revised standards released by New Zealand this time aim to be consistent with the relevant standards in Australia. Production enterprises exporting to New Zealand should pay attention to this and promptly conduct new standard compliance assessments on their existing export products. At the same time, third-party certification and testing agencies should be commissioned to conduct differential testing according to the new standards, obtain testing reports that comply with the new regulations, and produce and affix energy efficiency labels as required to ensure the smooth export of products.
