India releases new regulations on energy efficiency labeling for electrical appliances, officially implemented in 2026!

The Energy Efficiency Board of India (BEE) has officially released the Energy Efficiency Board (Electrical Appliance Labeling and Compliance) Regulations 2026, announcing the implementation of a new electrical appliance energy efficiency labeling management system nationwide from January 1, 2026. The comprehensive upgrade of the energy efficiency labeling system aims to establish a complete closed-loop system covering label application, information disclosure, market supervision, and violation penalties.
The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) of India officially released the "2026 Energy Efficiency (Electrical Appliance Labeling and Compliance) Regulations" on December 26, 2025, announcing the implementation of a new electrical appliance energy efficiency labeling management system nationwide from January 1, 2026.
This is the most comprehensive institutional upgrade in energy efficiency regulation in India in recent years, aimed at building a complete closed-loop system covering label application, information disclosure, market supervision, and violation penalties, promoting energy conservation and consumption reduction in the electrical industry, and effectively safeguarding consumers' right to know and choose.
1. Application for Energy Efficiency Labeling
The new regulations establish a strict pre licensing system. Before displaying energy efficiency labels on electrical products, any manufacturer or importer must submit an application to the Energy Efficiency Bureau and obtain written permission, which is usually valid for three years. This means that companies must regularly update their certifications to ensure that their products continue to comply with the latest energy efficiency standards.
2. Energy Efficiency Labeling Requirements
The new regulations require labels to clearly indicate the brand name, model year, energy efficiency performance parameters, star rating, country of origin, and official logo of the energy efficiency bureau, providing consumers with clear and easy to understand product energy efficiency information.
Digital information disclosure is a major highlight of this new regulation. The regulation requires that a QR code must be placed next to the energy efficiency label, and consumers can scan the code to obtain detailed technical parameters and energy efficiency data of the product. It is worth noting that the QR code display requirement applies to both offline physical retail channels and online e-commerce platforms, reflecting the regulatory authorities' unified coverage of omnichannel consumption scenarios.
In addition, energy efficiency labels must be printed or pasted on the product packaging to ensure that consumers can obtain key energy efficiency information before purchasing.
3. Compliance Enforcement
At the level of compliance and law enforcement, the new regulations grant the Energy Efficiency Bureau strong market supervision authority. The Energy Efficiency Bureau will conduct random sampling and testing of market circulation products and production processes to verify whether the actual energy efficiency performance of the products is consistent with the labeling claims.
Once the product fails the inspection, the license holder shall bear multiple rectification responsibilities: publicly publishing a notice of non-compliance on national newspapers, social media, and the official website of the Energy Efficiency Bureau, recalling the unqualified inventory from the market, and correcting the star rating labels of existing and subsequent products.
For serious violations such as forging energy efficiency labels, enterprises will face severe penalties such as legal proceedings, confiscation of security deposits, and suspension of model registration.
