The energy efficiency standards for household tumble dryers in the UK have come into effect, and traditional low efficiency products will exit the market by 2027

The UK has officially signed the Energy Related Products Ecological Design and Energy Information (Household Drum Dryers) Regulations 2026 (SI 2026/318). The regulation officially came into effect on April 10, 2026, establishing a new minimum energy efficiency standard for household tumble dryers in the UK Great Britain market.

On March 19, 2026, the UK Department for Energy Security and Net Zero officially signed Statutory Instrument No. 318, the "Ecodesign for Energy-Related Products and Energy Information (Household Tumble Driers) Regulations 2026" (SI 2026/318), and submitted it to Parliament on the same day. The regulations came into force on April 10, 2026, establishing new minimum energy efficiency standards for household tumble driers in the Great Britain market.

Starting from January 19, 2027, most traditional exhaust, condensing, and gas drum dryers with low energy efficiency will be phased out, and heat pump dryers will be encouraged.

Implementation Time Node

From the implementation timeline, regulatory requirements will be implemented in stages:

Starting from April 10, 2026, the ecological design requirements will officially come into effect, and a transition period will be opened simultaneously. Exhaust and condensing dryers can still be sold during this period.

Starting from September 19, 2026, energy labeling obligations will be activated, and companies must begin using transitional labels.

On January 19, 2027, the new version of mandatory energy labeling will be fully implemented, and all transitional arrangements will be terminated simultaneously. The new version of labeling will adopt a re grading system from A to G and introduce the repairability index (R value) as a mandatory labeling item.

On May 8, 2027, the power consumption limit for shutdown mode will be further tightened.

By December 9, 2032, regulatory agencies plan to complete a comprehensive regulatory effectiveness evaluation.

The new regulations clearly stipulate that the condensation efficiency of condensing dryers shall not be lower than 80%, which actually excludes the vast majority of non heat pump traditional models from the compliance scope.

The power consumption of a heat pump dryer per cycle is about 1.0 degree, which is about 50% more energy-efficient than a regular dryer. Each drying can save consumers up to about 50 pence. At the same time, due to the lower working temperature, the loss of clothes is also smaller.

For relevant enterprises, the new regulations have put forward clear compliance requirements: after April 2026, the prescribed testing work must be immediately initiated to complete the construction of the spare parts supply chain, update the product information page, and conduct internal compliance assessments; Transition label templates, product information manuals, and related promotional materials must be prepared before September 2026; The calculation of the repairability index (R value) and the design of new labels must be completed before January 2027, and the technical documentation must be updated simultaneously. All measurements and calculations must be strictly carried out in accordance with Appendix 4 and relevant designated standards. Violators will face market supervision and law enforcement actions.
