Japan revises technical standards for electrical appliances

Japan has revised the technical standards for electrical appliances, integrating multiple long-term parallel schedules into a unified standard system, and synchronously introducing the latest international technical specifications. This is a large-scale systematic adjustment in the field of electrical safety regulation in Japan in recent years.
In June 2026, the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry issued a document on the revision of the "Interpretation of the Technical Standards for Electrical Appliances". This revision focuses on integrating multiple long-term parallel schedules into a unified standard system and synchronously introducing the latest international technical specifications. It is a large-scale systematic adjustment in the field of electrical safety regulation in Japan in recent years.
The core action of this revision is to merge the second table (conduit and accessories), third table (fuse), and fifth table (current limiter) into the twelfth table that has been constructed based on international standards. The above three annexes all use the example benchmark system unique to Japan before June 2013, which has a certain gap with international norms. This integration means that the compliance path of related products will officially switch from Japan's unique standards to the J standard system that is in line with IEC international standards, marking a substantial step towards "international convergence" in Japan's electrical product safety regulation.
This revision involves the upgrading of 12 integrated specifications and the deletion of 5 benchmarks due to the expiration of the grace period. The 12 updates all belong to the replacement of the current JIS standards that have adopted IEC specifications with the latest version. The product categories cover a wide range, including industrial plugs and connectors (IEC 60309-1 5th edition, IEC 60320-1 4th edition), household food waste disposers (IEC 60335-2-16 6th edition), electrical equipment for sinks and basins (IEC 60335-2-55 4th edition), insecticides (IEC 60335-2-59 4th edition), junction boxes and enclosures for fixed electrical facilities (IEC 60670-21/22 latest edition), welding guns for arc welding devices (IEC 60974-7 4th edition), as well as rigid and flexible. Flexible and other types of conduit systems (IEC 61386 series 2nd edition). The 5 deleted benchmarks are old standards that have already had grace periods and have now expired, belonging to normal standard lifecycle management.
The impact of this revision should be taken seriously. Products that were originally declared compliant based on Table 2, 3, and 5, especially wire tubes, fuses, and current limiters, must have their compliance reconfirmed according to the corresponding J standard in Table 12. For products involving updates to the 12 JIS standards mentioned above, it is also necessary to promptly verify whether the referenced benchmark version is still within its validity period. It is recommended that relevant enterprises closely follow the official announcement of the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, fully communicate with certification agencies, and initiate the evaluation and response work for standard switching as soon as possible to avoid market access risks caused by standard iteration.
