The quality and safety risk assessment standards for smart home appliances have been released and will be implemented in February 2027

The national standard GB/T 4777-2026 "Guidelines for Quality and Safety Risk Classification Evaluation of Intelligent Household Appliances" will be implemented on February 1, 2027. The standard establishes the basic principles, risk classification, evaluation index system, evaluation methods and processes, and risk level classification for the risk classification and evaluation of intelligent household appliances.

 

Recently, the State Administration for Market Regulation approved the release of the national standard "Guidelines for Quality and Safety Risk Classification Evaluation of Intelligent Household Appliances" (GB/T 4777-2026), which will be implemented on February 1, 2027.

 


This standard establishes the basic principles, risk classification, evaluation index system, evaluation methods and processes, and risk level classification for the risk classification and evaluation of smart home appliances, helping to resolve the hidden dangers of traditional physical security and new information security, and promoting the standardized and high-quality development of the smart home appliance industry. In response to the current industry situation where smart home appliances have both traditional hardware risks and new digital risks in networking, this standard mainly makes three provisions.


 

 

I. Define four categories of safety risks

 
 
 

 

The quality and safety risks of smart home appliances are categorized into four major types: electrical safety, functional safety, information security, and data and privacy protection. This classification not only covers traditional physical hazards of appliances, such as electric leakage, fire, mechanical pinching, and temperature control failure, but also addresses digital risks associated with smart connectivity, including network intrusion, system vulnerabilities, user privacy leaks, and unauthorized data access by third parties, thereby comprehensively safeguarding consumers' personal safety, property, and personal information.
 

 

 

II. Achieve Comprehensive Quantitative Assessment of Product Risks

 
 
 

 

Establish a comprehensive evaluation framework that considers the safety attributes of the product itself, industry regulatory compliance data, and consumers' actual usage experience. It clearly defines test assessment aspects such as product hardware, control systems, and network transmission while incorporating public feedback from e-commerce reviews and safety-related public opinion, ensuring a more objective and holistic product safety assessment.
 

 

 

III. Unified Evaluation Process and Risk Grading Mechanism

 
 
 


Develop a complete and practical closed-loop evaluation process, supporting multiple evaluation methods that are suitable for different home appliance categories.


Evaluation methods: There are various methods for classifying and evaluating the quality and safety risks of intelligent household appliances, such as Analytic Hierarchy Process, Delphi Method, Data Envelopment Analysis, Artificial Neural Network Method, Double Base Point Method (TOPSIS), etc. Appendix B provides commonly used evaluation methods.


Evaluation process: The quality and safety risk classification evaluation of smart home appliance products can selectively evaluate single or multiple indicators based on one or more characteristics of the type and model of smart home appliance products. The evaluation process includes preparation before evaluation, selection of evaluation index system, selection of evaluation methods, determination of index weights, implementation of risk classification evaluation, and presentation of evaluation results.

 

According to GB/T 22760-2020, the quality and safety risks of smart household appliances can be classified into four levels from high to low, namely A (serious risk), B (moderate risk), C (low risk), and D (acceptable risk).

The release of GB/T 4777-2026 marks the shift of safety supervision in the domestic smart home appliance industry from "post accident disposal" to "pre risk grading control". For home appliance production, research and development, and manufacturing enterprises, it is necessary to complete product self inspection and compliance upgrades in advance against new standards, optimize design and upgrade firmware for high-risk issues, and achieve early identification and disposal of safety risks. For industry practitioners and consumers, standardized evaluation rules can also be relied upon to more clearly identify the safety level of smart home appliances, promoting the long-term healthy development of the smart home industry.
