Japan formulates six standards for the detection methods of food additives in food

The Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare of Japan has issued Announcement 0529 No. 2 on the development of six standards for the detection of food additives in food.

On May 29, 2023, the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare of Japan issued Notice No. 2 of Raw Food Development 0529, establishing six standards for the detection of food additives in food. The specific content is as follows:

(1) Develop detection method standards for three types of antioxidants, including dibutyl hydroxytoluene (BHT), in vegetable oil and other foods, specifically liquid chromatography, with a detection limit of 0.005 g/kg;

(2) Develop standards for the detection of 12 types of pigments such as edible red 2 in food, specifically thin-layer chromatography, with a detection limit of 0.01 g/kg;

(3) Formulate the detection methods and standards for three sweeteners in food, such as o-sulfonylbenzoimide, specifically UV spectrophotometry, with the detection limit of 0.01 g/kg;

(4) Develop detection method standards for two acidity regulators in food, including disodium ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, specifically liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry, with a detection limit of 0.01 g/kg;

(5) Develop detection methods for two types of pigments in food, including chlorophyll copper, specifically atomic absorption spectrophotometry with a detection limit of 0.0005g/kg. This announcement shall take effect from the date of its release.
