ISO releases microbiological safety standards for toys

In August 2023, the International Organization for Standardization released Part 12 of the ISO 8124 series of toy safety standards.

This document specifies acceptable standards for microbial cleanliness and preservation adequacy of specific toy materials. The requirements in this document apply to all toys containing or supplying water-based materials (such as paste, putty, liquid or gel). In addition, this document also applies to toys containing cosmetics. The powder to be mixed with water and similar substances are also within the scope of application of this document.

This standard was developed by the WG 10 Microbiological Properties working group of ISO TC 181 and is related to toy safety.

Part 12 is the first ISO 8124 standard to address microbiological requirements for toys, although other documents have already published information on microbiological safety.

The standard is mainly based on the existing requirements in ASTM F963 and has made some modifications to narrow down its scope and facilitate its use in multiple jurisdictions. There are some differences between the standard and the European reference standard for microbiology in toys, Protocol No. 2: Microbial safety of toys in aqueous media (Revision 4).
