South Korea Revises the Designated Announcement on Toxic Substances

On January 10, 2024, the Korean Environmental Research Institute issued Announcement No. 2024-3, which revised the "Toxic Substances Designated Announcement" with the aim of more effective management and monitoring of chemical substances.

This revision mainly involves the following aspects:

1. Chemical substance name modification: Chemical substance names with unique numbers "97-1-296", "2014-1-718", and "2017-1-763" have been modified.

2. New toxic substances: Multiple toxic substances have been added after the unique number "2023-1173", ranging from "2023-1174" to "2023-1212".

This announcement shall come into effect three months after its publication. According to the revised Notice on the designation of toxic substances, the substances included in it will:

1. Accept a hazard assessment to determine potential hazards to human health and the environment.

2. Based on the hazards and potential risks identified in its assessment results, the government may formulate or modify regulations such as the Chemical Substance Management Act, the Chemical Substance

Registration and Evaluation Act, and the Classification and Labeling Regulations for Chemical Substances to restrict or prohibit the substance, which may involve production, import, sales, storage, and handling.

Therefore, the Korean Environmental Research Institute calls on all relevant enterprises and individuals to pay attention to these changes and comply with new regulations to ensure compliance with national environmental safety standards. The government and environmental protection departments will continue to cooperate to achieve more sustainable management of chemical substances.
