California Proposition 65 lists vinyl acetate as a carcinogen

OEHHA has included vinyl acetate in the California Proposition 65 Carcinogenic List and will require a warning label from January 3, 2026. Vinyl acetate is widely used in fields such as adhesives, coatings, textiles, building materials, automobiles, electronics, and agricultural films.
On January 17, 2025, OEHHA announced that vinyl acetate would be officially included in the list of carcinogens under California Proposition 65 starting from January 3, 2025. According to OEHHA regulations, the warning requirement for severe exposure to vinyl acetate copolymers will take effect on January 3, 2026. This means that manufacturers and distributors of related products need to label warnings on their products to alert consumers of the potential hazards of the chemical.
Vinyl acetate is an important organic chemical raw material widely used in multiple fields. Here are some of the main application products:
1. Adhesive
Vinyl acetate is the basic raw material for synthesizing polyvinyl acetate (PVAc), widely used in various adhesives and binders, especially in construction and paper coatings.
2. Coatings
Used for manufacturing water-based coatings, it is favored due to its good adhesion and water resistance.
3. Textile processing
In the textile industry, vinyl acetate is used as a treatment agent to improve the durability and performance of fibers.
4. Building materials
Vinyl acetate is used as a reinforcing agent in building materials to improve the bonding strength and waterproof performance of cement.
5. Automotive industry
Vinyl acetate and its copolymers are used in the manufacturing of automotive components, providing excellent elasticity and chemical resistance.
6. Electronic products
Vinyl acetate can be used to manufacture insulation materials and hot melt adhesives for wires and cables.
7. Agricultural film
Vinyl acetate is also used in greenhouse films and agricultural production films to improve durability and moisture resistance.
