From January 1, 2026, South Korea's Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) will introduce energy efficiency label certification requirements for three new products: clothes care machines, toilets, and electric steam saunas.
Previously, the Korea Energy Agency (KEA) released the latest Korean MEPS energy efficiency rating label certification system. From January 1, 2026, the MEPS will add energy efficiency label certification requirements for three new products: clothing care machines, toilets, and electric steam saunas.
The energy efficiency rating system in South Korea is a mandatory reporting system that facilitates consumers in purchasing energy-efficient products and ensures that manufacturers (importers) produce and sell energy-saving products from the production (import) stage. Within the efficiency rating system, efficiency levels are categorized from 1 to 5 based on energy consumption efficiency or energy usage, and Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) are adopted.
On January 2, 2025, the Korea Energy Agency (KEA) officially released the "Announcement on the Implementation Dates of Energy Efficiency Management Equipment Standards" (hereinafter referred to as the "Announcement"). It explicitly requires manufacturers to refer to the effective dates of various products specified in the new regulations when creating energy efficiency labels. Non-compliant labels will face fines of up to $18,000 per model. This revision marks a new stage in South Korea's energy efficiency management system, expanding the scope of covered products, upgrading technical standards, and strengthening market access supervision. The comprehensive upgrade of South Korea's energy efficiency labeling system is not only an inevitable requirement for green transformation but also provides differentiated competitive opportunities for technology-leading enterprises.
