The new standard GB/T 2099.10 for plugs and sockets has been issued and will take effect on October 1, 2026

GB/T 2099.10-2026 "plugs and sockets for household and similar purposes - Part 10: Special requirements for plugs and sockets applicable to the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region" will come into effect on October 1, 2026.

According to the announcement of the State Administration for Market Regulation, GB/T 2099.10-2026 "plugs and sockets for household and similar purposes - Part 10: Special requirements for plugs and sockets applicable to the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region" was officially released on March 31, 2026 and will be implemented from October 1, 2026. ‌‌

Applicable product range

This document specifies the technical requirements for the rating, marking, anti electric shock protection, structure, electrical performance, mechanical performance, etc. of plugs and sockets applicable to the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

This document applies to plugs and sockets for indoor or outdoor use, household and similar purposes, only for AC power, with a rated voltage of 50V or above but not exceeding 250V, a rated current not exceeding 20A, with grounding contacts and fuses, suitable for use in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

The plugs and sockets that meet the requirements of this document are suitable for normal use. The ambient temperature usually does not exceed+40 ℃, but the average ambient temperature during a 24-hour period does not exceed+35 ℃. The lower limit of ambient air temperature is -5 ℃.

Main technical content

This document is a standard for household plug and socket products applicable to the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, including rating, classification, marking, size inspection, anti electric shock protection, grounding measures, terminals and tips, structure of converters, interlocking sockets of converters, aging resistance, protection and moisture resistance provided by the outer shell, insulation resistance and electrical strength, operation of grounding contacts, temperature rise, breaking capacity, normal operation, force required to pull out plugs, flexible cables and their connections, mechanical strength, heat resistance, screws, current carrying parts and their connections, creepage distance, electrical gap and distance through sealant, resistance to abnormal heat, flame resistance and electrical trace resistance of insulation materials, rust resistance, and pin with insulation sheath. Meaning of Standard Purpose

With the proposal of the national strategy for building the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area, the depth and breadth of integration and development between the mainland and Hong Kong have been continuously enhanced in recent years. The frequent exchanges between the people of the two places have brought about a new situation of "purchase in the mainland and use in Hong Kong" of electronic and electrical products, such as soybean milk machines, juice presses, health pots, etc. However, due to the different types and sizes of plugs and sockets between mainland China and Hong Kong, electrical plugs produced in mainland China cannot be inserted into sockets used in Hong Kong, which seriously hinders trade and common development.

According to Chinese standards and market access requirements, electronic and electrical products sold in mainland China should be equipped with plugs that meet the requirements of standards such as GB/T 1002 and GB/T 2099, namely flat parallel two plug plugs or flat three plug plugs. In Hong Kong, due to historical reasons, British style plugs and sockets are still being used, namely three pin rectangular plugs and sockets (compliant with BS 1363 standard) and three pin round plugs and sockets (compliant with BS 546 standard). Due to different standards implemented in the two regions, plug and socket products suitable for use in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, such as "Mainland to Hong Kong" and "Hong Kong to Mainland", have emerged in the market. However, the lack of corresponding standards makes it difficult to guarantee the safety and performance of related products, posing significant safety hazards.

This standard will be guided by the national strategy of building the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area, combined with market demand, to study the requirements for plug and socket types in mainland China and Hong Kong, develop new plug and socket products suitable for Hong Kong, unify the technical requirements of products with standards, effectively improve product quality, and ensure the personal and property safety of users. From a long-term development perspective, the publication and implementation of this standard will effectively guide Hong Kong to gradually accept the types and sizes of plugs and sockets in mainland China, break down the barrier of mismatched plugs and sockets between the two places, help electronic and electrical products produced in mainland China to connect with the Hong Kong market, and promote further trade and connectivity between the two regions.
