The first national standard for household coffee machines, officially implemented in May 2026

The first domestic coffee machine product standard in China, GB/T 46503-2025 "Household and Similar Use Coffee Machines", will be officially implemented on May 1, 2026. This standard puts forward technical requirements for the general performance, specific parameters, and user experience of household coffee machines, which will comprehensively enhance the overall technical level and product competitiveness of China's coffee machine industry, and promote the high-quality development of China's coffee machine industry.

China's first household coffee machine product standard, GB/T 46503—2025 "Household and Similar Coffee Machines," will officially come into effect on May 1, 2026. This standard outlines technical requirements for the general performance, specific parameters, and user experience of household coffee machines, ensuring the consistency and professionalism of coffee preparation. It not only fills the gap in industry standards but also promotes the future development of China's coffee machine industry.

Core Interpretation

This standard specifies the classification, technical requirements, inspection rules, labeling, packaging, transportation, and storage requirements for household and similar coffee machines, and describes the corresponding test methods.

This standard is applicable to the production, inspection, and sale of household and similar coffee machines with a rated voltage not exceeding 250V for single-phase appliances and 480V for other appliances. The coffee machines covered by this standard have at least the function of making Italian espresso. Not suitable for outdoor use of coffee machines and capsule coffee machines.

This standard specifies ten technical requirements for the normal working environment, electrical safety, electromagnetic compatibility, shutdown power and standby power, noise, pressure control performance, volume deviation, minimum water production capacity, coffee production performance, and steam performance of household coffee machines. Among them, the coffee making performance is further refined into five aspects: coffee quantity, coffee temperature, coffee concentration, extraction rate, and coffee oil. This standard proposes specific testing methods for specific performance indicators of coffee machine products, such as coffee making performance, grinding performance, and pressure control performance.

According to the standard, the range of extraction pressure for coffee machines should not exceed 0.7 bar to avoid affecting the taste of coffee due to unstable pressure. The actual deviation of the water tank capacity is not more than 5%, the deviation of the output when making coffee with the minimum and maximum water amounts is not more than 10%, and the moisture content of steam milk froth is not more than 15%.

According to the standard requirements, in terms of coffee production performance, the coffee temperature should be controlled between 70 ° C and 82 ° C. The coffee concentration produced by fully automatic and semi-automatic models should not be less than 5% and 4%, respectively. The extraction rate should be maintained within a reasonable range of 16% to 24%, and the fat to liquid ratio of coffee oil should not be lower than 0.08, in order to preserve the unique flavor of Italian espresso to the greatest extent possible.

According to the standard, in terms of noise control, the noise level of models with grinding function shall not exceed 80dB (A), and the noise level of models without grinding function shall not exceed 65dB (A). In terms of energy consumption management, the standby power after shutdown should not exceed 0.5W, for models with display function, the standby power should not exceed 1W, and for models without display function, the standby power should not exceed 0.5W, achieving energy saving and environmental protection.

Standard requirements

Electrical Safety：

The appliance shall comply with the requirements of GB/T 4706.1 and GB/T 4706.19. If the appliance is equipped with an independent grinding function, it shall also comply with the requirements of GB/T 4706.30.

Note: The independent grinding function is regarded as a coffee grinder.

Electromagnetic Compatibility：

The equipment shall comply with the requirements of GB 4343.1, GB/T 4343.2, GB 17625.1, and GB/T 17625.2.

Shut-down power and standby power：

The shutdown power of appliances with shutdown mode should not exceed 0.5W.

The standby power of appliances with standby mode should not exceed:

-Capable of displaying information or status (including clock): 1W;

-Without any information or status display function: 0.5W.

Note: For appliances with network modes featuring communication protocols such as Wi-Fi (Wireless Local Area Network) and Bluetooth, the requirements for off-mode power and standby power do not apply when these functions are activated.

Noise：

Appliances with grinding function shall have a noise level not exceeding 80 dB(A).

Appliances without grinding function shall have a noise level not exceeding 65 dB(A).

Note: Excludes noise generated by other functions such as steam function and special drink preparation.

Pressure control performance：

For appliances with extraction pressure, the range of measured pressure should not exceed 70 kPa (0.7 bar). If the appliance declares an extraction pressure value, the deviation between the measured pressure and the declared value should not exceed ±10%.

Volume deviation：

The actual capacity of the appliance water tank shall not deviate from the rated capacity by more than ±5%.

If the appliance is also marked with a minimum capacity, the capacity deviation below the minimum water level line shall also comply with this clause.

Note: This does not apply to appliances with automatic water supply and no water tank.

最小水量制作能力：

The appliance should have a minimum water volume label or a minimum water volume reminder function.

The deviation between the quality of coffee made at the minimum water level mark and the quality of coffee made at the maximum water level mark should not exceed ± 10% when the liquid level coincides with the mark.

The deviation between the quality of coffee made with minimum water volume reminder function and the quality of coffee made at maximum water volume should not exceed ± 10% before the reminder function is activated.

If the appliance has both a minimum water volume label and a minimum water volume reminder function, it should meet the corresponding requirements above.

Note 1: This requirement applies only to the pure coffee brewing function, such as milk frothing, special beverages, steam function, hot water, etc. are not applicable.

Note 2: If the reminder function is activated during coffee brewing but allows a normal brewing cycle to complete, it shall be considered compliant with this clause.

Note 3: If the user manual specifies applicable settings, this clause applies only to those settings; if not specified, it applies to all settings.

Coffee Making Performance：

1. Coffee quantity

The deviation between the actual amount of coffee and the claimed amount of coffee should not exceed ± 18% for instruments that claim to produce coffee.

For instruments that claim to produce a range of coffee, the actual amount of coffee should not exceed the claimed range and should not exceed ± 18% of the average of the upper and lower limits of the claimed range.

If the appliance claims multiple coffee quantities, each claimed quantity shall comply with this clause.

2. Coffee temperature

The temperature of Italian espresso made with utensils should be within the range of 70 ° C to 82 ° C.

3. Coffee concentration

The coffee concentration of Italian espresso made with utensils should not be less than:

Semi automatic coffee machine: 5%;

Fully automatic coffee machine: 4%.

4. Extraction rate

The coffee extraction rate of Italian espresso made with utensils should be within the range of 16% to 24%.

5. Coffee oil

The fat to liquid ratio of Italian espresso made with utensils should not be less than 0.08.

Steam Performance：

Apparatus with steam milk frothing function, the moisture content shall not exceed 15%.
